Explore Local Music and Live Events Around the World
Setting the Stage
From Research to Prototype
We looked at research that was conducted with 1:1 interviews with 70 Spotify listeners, half of them being bicultural and bilingual. The data collection spanned more than 250 hours of in-person conversations and observations with our customers in Boston, San Francisco, New York and San Diego. Some of the results of this study are generalizable across cultures, while others need further research in different markets.

01
Today, Spotify functions primarily as a utility—users search, save, and play songs they've already discovered elsewhere, rather than finding new music on the platform itself.
02
Our current definition of user taste is too narrow, focusing heavily on past listening history and sonic attributes like moods and activities—missing the broader context of how people discover and connect with music.
03
Countries (and especially young people) increasingly prefer local content. "Local" is a powerful source of meaning—it reaffirms identity, expresses shared perspectives, supports community, and preserves culture.
04
Gen Z yearns for authenticity in the digital age, constantly seeking the next cool pocket of culture—making local music discovery a powerful way to connect with genuine cultural moments.
